3-Star Riley on Hokies

3-Star Riley on Hokies

Three-star Donovan Riley of Baltimore Poly High (Md.) talks about his recent visit with the Hokies, Vandy and upcoming trip to Pitt.

Baltimore Poly (Md.) three-star defensive back Donovan Riley visited Virginia Tech this past weekend, the first school to offer him a scholarship.

"It was great! It was definitely a learning experience from the academic standpoint and the athletic standpoint."

It was Riley's first time on the Hokie campus and first time meeting the coaching staff.

"It was my first time on the campus and I had the opportunity to meet players and coaches. Coach [Frank] Beamer is a champion, you can feel it through his handshake. My recruiting coach [Kevin] Sherman is great. The DB coach [Torrian] Gray is awesome as well. It was a family type feeling. I got lost on campus but once I told I was a recruit they willingly gave me directions. I met coach Sherman and he introduced me to everyone."

Riley got a dose of what it's like at the next level as he was invited to sit in on a defensive back meeting with Coach Gray.

"I sat in on the defensive back meeting and watched coach Gray break down film of the actual defensive backs from previous classes. In person, I could get a good feel on what it's like at next level to have your technique broken down," he said as he was ready to jump right in.

"I am a good learner and good student so watching them on film and seeing them live I watched how certain players corrected their mistakes. It was remarkable. I could see myself out there. My eyes were wide open and I was paying attention just in case they wanted me to strap up. I was prepared."

Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt are the only schools Riley has visited and it could be some time before he finds the right fit, he says.

"Vanderbilt was a great visit. The coaches there are class A coaches filled with energy. The coaches at Va Tech had championship swag and respectfully so because they earned it. Virginia Tech and Vandy are the two places I visited. I am still open. I am enjoying the recruiting process. I have not decided a one, two, who is first and who is second. I am still going through process and researching the academic backgrounds to see which school is the best fit for me."

Looking ahead, Riley will participate in the Badger Sports 7-on-7 tournament at Pittsburgh this weekend (April 8) where he will kill two birds with one stone...or quite possibly three.

"I am supposed to go to Pitt this weekend. I talked with Coach Tony Gibson. I am going up to see their practice Saturday. I will compete. It's competitive and chance to get bump against good players on the circuit as well. Hopefully I will knock out three birds and come back with an offer. But if not, I am just enjoying this process."
