Five Offers For Bailey

Daniel Bailey

Centreville small-back Daniel Bailey is one of a host of talented running backs in the state of Virginia in the class of 2004. Bailey, a pleasure to talk to, spoke this weekend about his experience at the Nike Camp, scholarship offers he has received, and his favorites.

In mid-May, I spoke with Centreville's Daniel Bailey at the Nike Camp in Blacksburg, Virginia. At the time, one school, Syracuse, had offered the 5'9 running back. But with an impressive Nike performance, Bailey has now picked up several more offers.

"I think I did really good," Bailey said. "I ran a 4.5 40, my vertical was a 34', and I benched 185 15 times." And he impressed in individual drills too, of course. "Oh yeah, they put me in the first group with the wide receivers," Bailey noted. "I went with the wide receivers because I do both at Centreville and wide receivers are more prominent at Nike."

Since then, his recruitment has picked up immensely. "It's going real good," said Bailey, who is hearing from Penn State, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Marshall, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and a host of others. "I've got a lot of offers. Syracuse, Wake Forest, Marshall, East Carolina, Ohio, and probably some more coming. I think some of those are from the Nike Camp."

While a host of schools are on Bailey's trail, he does have a list of early favorites. "I'm keeping my eyes open," Bailey said, "but I'd say Penn State, Syracuse, East Carolina, Marshall, and Wake Forest are probably my top ones. I'm looking at anyone and everyone, though. I'm looking to take my very last minute making my decision."

This summer, Bailey will attend a couple camps. "I'm going to the Penn State camp, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, ECU wanted me to come down there, and a lot of other one-a-days like UVa, Virginia Tech, and Maryland."

While Bailey did not mention he favors Tech, he will camp there. Does he have much interest in the Hokies?

"I've heard from Tech and they send stuff in the mail often," Bailey said. "We also got to meet with the coaches cause we stayed over after the Nike Camp and that went real well. I talked to the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator and that was cool."

Bailey was also impressed with the campus and the field. "They have a real nice gamefield and program," Bailey said, "and the campus is great. At first, I wasn't as interested in Tech as I was with Virginia, but now I know Tech is pretty good."

The big question now is whether the Hokies will offer, however, and that remains to be seen with very few scholarships available this year. Stay tuned to VTI for more on Bailey and his Centreville teammates this recruiting season!
