Danville, Virginia running back Kenny Lewis, Jr., the son of former Tech football star Kenny Lewis, Sr., is looking to make his own mark in the football world. The younger Lewis wants to continue the family’s football tradition, and may just do so in a Hokie uniform.
One of the top athletes in the state, the rising senior at George Washington High tells VT Insider that he is being recruited “as a cornerback at Tennessee and as a running back at Virginia Tech and Maryland.” Although he is getting looks from major schools like Tech and Tennessee, he has not received any offers yet. “I don’t have any offers,” Lewis said, “and it’s hard to tell whether schools will offer in the future too.”
When asked about his favorite schools at this point in time, Lewis named his top two. “I’m looking at Virginia Tech and Tennessee more,” Lewis said. “Those are my two main interests.”
VT Insider then asked Lewis to comment on his two favorites, Virginia Tech and Tennessee. “I like Tech’s football background for one thing and want a good team with a good program. I think I can fit in [at Tech] but they say I have to continue to work hard and put all my effort into it. Tennessee has told me the same thing.”
Speaking of Tennessee, Lewis noted that he has not visited Tennessee or Maryland’s campus to date and has no plans to do so at this point. He is too busy staying in shape and getting stronger. “Right now, I’m just working out a whole lot,” he noted. “I’ll take some visits eventually.”
Currently, the lightening-quick Lewis benches 265 and squats 410 pounds. He continues to work to get stronger in an effort to improve his running inside the tackles. “Right now, [I’m working on] my inside game. If I have a step on you, there is no way anyone will catch me. I need to work on my inside game so it’s as good as my outside game.”
Lewis has set his goals high for the upcoming season. “I want to be the best running back in the division next year,” Lewis said. “As a team, I guess everyone wants to win their state championship. That’s what I want to do too.”
