Tech Turning up the Heat on Powell

Tydreke Powell

In an attempt to steal another big time recruit from out of North Carolina, the Virginia Tech staff has turned up their recruiting efforts on Tydreke Powell capitalizing on the uncertainty surrounding North Carolina's coaching staff, his former favorite.

"The whole defensive staff came to my school last week," said Powell. "Coach [Charley] Wiles is supposed to come back this week [for an in-home visit], but I'll be in South Carolina next week. So I'll have to call him and change that."

Powell, a 6-foot-4 295-pound defensive tackle from Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford County, revealed that the Virginia Tech coaching staff has recruited him hard since the early parts of his recruitment.

The pressure has paid off as Powell claims the Hokies are basically neck-and-neck with childhood favorite North Carolina.

"[I like] the way they play and rotate their defensive lineman," said Powell. "They're always keeping me informed by sending me stats.

"I'm looking forward to getting back down there."

Powell, who attended the Hokies' spring game, has scheduled an official visit to Blacksburg for January 26th. He will also officially visit Florida State on January 19th and is in the process of working a date out with Penn State. He is considering UNC and Florida for his final two official visit slots.

During his senior season, Powell posted yet another excellent year with 135 tackles and 14 sacks. He also added four touchdowns in limited action at fullback. Recommended Stories
