Sutton Thinks Highly of Hokies

The athleticism and versatility of defensive end Chaz Sutton has a lot of people talking, and a lot of schools are interested. The 6-4, 230-pound prospect from Jenkins High School in Savannah, Ga. currently holds 11 offers including one from Virginia Tech.

"I've got offers from Virginia Tech, Louisville, Cal, South Carolina, West Virginia, Rutgers and some others," he said. "There are some others I'm looking at, but they haven't offered yet. I'd say my top three at this point is Virginia Tech, South Carolina and West Virginia."

What does Sutton like about the Hokies?

"Virginia Tech has had the top defense in the country for a while now, and who wouldn't want to be a part of that? I feel like I'd have a great chance to play early if I went there too. That would be big for me. They have a lot of big athletes like myself. When you watch my highlight tapes you see a guy that's 6-4 and about 230, playing defensive end, linebacker and safety. Tech loves that in their defensive players."

Sutton came close to committing to Tech a couple of weeks ago, but decided to wait a while.

"I thought about committing, but now I'm going to wait until after my senior season or after the college season is over," he said. "I figure there's really no downside to waiting. If I wait, I think Virginia Tech will still be interested in me. I'll still be able to go there."

While it seems like the Hokies are in a great position with Sutton, his other favorites have a reason to hold out hope.

"South Carolina is close to home, so that might be a factor. What really stuck out when I was there was the fact that they have some senior linebackers that are leaving, so I might have a chance to play early. I met with their coaches and they all seem like a great group of guys.

"As for West Virginia, Coach Frey came down to see me last week. We talked a little bit about what's going on there and it sounded good. He told me that they have a great group of guys on their team, and he thought the area was a lot like Savannah. He spoke as a coach about where I'd fit in on the team, and he told me I could help them compete for a national championship my first year there."

As it might seem, playing time will weigh heavily on Sutton's mind when he makes his decision. He will also consider other factors.

"I want to get on the field, of course," he said. "But I'm also going to be looking at the whole atmosphere at a school. Who's going to be surrounding me? What are the people around me going to be like?

"I also want to play for a coach that I think is going to be there for my four years. I want to feel like my position coach is going to be around, and I don't want to have to deal with all the head coaching rumors. I want to know I'm going to play for the coach I sign to play for."

Sutton plans on attending a camp hosted by Urban Meyer in Florida this summer. He said he is interested in the Gators, but they are not yet a favorite because they have not offered. Recommended Stories
