The 6-3, 215-pound quarterback led Western Branch to a 10-2 record before losing to Salem. Including the playoffs he passed for 1,500 yards and rushed for another 600.
What does the recruiting picture look like for him?“North Carolina offered me a scholarship not long ago,” he said. “Virginia Tech was my first offer though. I know UVa likes me. Maryland likes me a lot. I’m hearing from Penn State, Stanford and Oregon too. NC State was at the school not long ago.”
The Hokies appear to be in a good position with Newsome. “Their coach in this area, Coach Newsome, was around here for the last couple of weeks. I didn’t really get to talk to him but I know they like me a lot. It’s a school I really like.
“I’m going to be looking first at the education a school offers. Playing time? Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to play my first year, but I wouldn’t mind redshirting either. What I might do is graduate early so I can get to college for spring practice. That way I could get a feel for what college football is like.”
When asked what offensive system Newsome feels he would excel in, his answer was simple.
“Whatever the coaches tell me to do. If the play calls for me to drop back in the pocket, I’m going to get the ball to the receiver. If things break down I’m not going to get caught. I will get to the outside.”
Newsome has no plans to take unofficial visits in the near future.
