Scout's Eye on: DE Zack McCray

Zack McCray

TE/DE Zack McCray from Brookville High in Virginia was a nationally recruited kid with a ton of offers from schools all over the ACC and SEC. McCray chose the Hokies and will fit right in to the attacking style of defense Bud Foster runs. Take a look at McCray's junior highlights as well as a breakdown of his game inside.

Zack McCray is a big time defensive end prospect who had offers from a ton of schools, including Alabama, LSU, Virginia, North Carolina, N.C. State, and Wake Forest, just to name a few. When it was all said and done, McCray chose Virginia Tech. Zack will be staying close to home and the Hokies landed themselves a big time defensive end prospect. Take a look at McCray's junior highlights below. He is wearing number 86.

Zack has pretty good size and excellent speed to go along with it. He is a long strider who gets off the ball extremely well. McCray has a wide array of pass rush moves, with the swim move and his spin move probably being his best. Zack stands up well against the run but will certainly need to add some bulk to hold up against some of the 300-plus pound offensive linemen he will face week in and week out in the ACC. McCray probably could have found a scholarship to play tight end somewhere as well, but getting in on the defensive side of the ball as a Hokie is going to be great for him.

Says McCray, "The biggest thing I am working on is my overall strength. I am bulking up and working on my bull rush. I just want to be more complete as a defensive end, not just a pass rush specialist. I want to be more like a true D-end."

McCray should be just fine in Blacksburg. He will need to add some bulk. At 6-foot-3, Zack could easily add twenty to thirty pounds and move around very well at around 260-pounds.

What I like most about McCray is his competitiveness and his attitude. He has a great motor and an inner drive necessary to be great. There was a reason that this kid was recruited by schools all over the country, and it will show in the next few years as a Hokie.
