Clowney On Tech Visit

Clowney On Tech Visit

VT Insider has learned that Virginia Tech will have a relatively unknown visitor on campus this weekend. Delray Beach, Florida wide receiver David Clowney is taking an official visit to Virginia Tech starting today. <P>

Florida wide receiver David Clowney is in the process of taking his final official visit, a trip to Blacksburg, Virginia to visit Virginia Tech. VTI spoke with his coach, Jim Maloney, concerning Clowney's recruitment.

"[Clowney's] narrowed his choices down to Virginia Tech, Toledo, and Central Michigan," Maloney said Friday afternoon. "He's actually there at Virginia Tech right now."

Clowney, a prospect being recruited by Coach Charley Wiles, has been offered a scholarship by the Hokies, as well as Toledo and Central Michigan, according to his coach. However, other reports note that Clowney does not have an offer from Virginia Tech at this point but may receive one on his visit.

How does Coach Maloney describe Clowney's game?

"He's 6-2 and extremely fast," Maloney said. "He's an exciting player when the ball gets into his hands. He's able to run away from people. I know he's a 10.8 100 meter guy and he was a state qualifier in the 200," Maloney continued. "He's around a 4.4 forty.

This past year, Clowney caught 22 balls for 475 yards, according to Coach Maloney. That's an average of a 22.59 yards per reception.

With his speed and that kind of production per catch, why were there not more schools knocking at Clowney's door?

"I think a lot of it was that he was that he was behind an all-state receiver last year so he was our #3 receiver," Maloney said. "Then we didn't get him the football as much as some of the big schools would have liked this year with a change of our offense."

And why did Virginia Tech and other schools start showing heavy interest in Clowney?

"I think the thing that helped him the most was a 97-yard reception against Pompano Beach Ely," Maloney said. "He was running away from people and when you can do that against Ely, that's impressive."

Impressive. Exactly what the Tech coaches think of this prospect out of Delray Beach. Although Clowney is not a highly recruited prospect, the Tech coaches feel that, thanks to his size, athleticism, and speed, he could be a star in the making.

"Coach Wiles from Tech has been recruiting him," Maloney said, " and [Tech's coaches say] he has the ability to come in and play quickly given all the tools that he has."

Will Clowney be a Hokie? How will his visit to Blacksburg be? We'll know soon!

Stay tuned to VT Insider in the coming days for more on Clowney's recruitment as signing day approaches.
