Virginia Tech's basketball program had a group of prospects down to Blacksburg thish past weekend including Marquie Cooke, Philip Okonma, Emanuel Willis, Deron Washington, and Josh Thornton. VTI spoke with one of those excellent prospects, Josh Thornton, shortly after he returned from Tech.

“Yes I was able to go down there and visit,” Josh Thornton said. “It went very well. I liked the campus and area. I definitely enjoyed myself down there. I’m getting a good feel for Tech coaches and how the players interact with the coaches and how the coaches interact with the players.”

Thornton arrived in Blacksburg Friday around 3:45. “After that, we met with the coaches and talked with them and the staff. Then we went back to the hotel. Later that evening we went to the game between the Virginia Tech Hokies and EA Sports.”

“Saturday, we went around to the Hokie Hoopfest where players were signing autographs and coaches were signing too,” he said. “After that, they took us on a tour of the campus.”

Thornton, who got to see dorms, academic buildings, and other features of Tech on his tour, then attended Virginia Tech basketball practice. “After that, we went to the VT-Miami game,” he said. “It was very exciting, very exciting. It was very fun.”

How does Thornton’s list of schools look right now? “Right now I’m wide open,” he said. “I’m new to this basically. I’m wide open, man. I’m hearing from Tennessee, Texas, Clemson, FSU, Arkansas, Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, Notre Dame, California, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Miami, Stanford, Yale, Wright State, Georgetown, Rhode Island, Holy Cross, YSU, Tulane, Xavier, Seton Hall, there’s more though. Illinois, Wake Forest, Louisville, Kentucky, Purdue...”

Quite a list of schools, for sure. Of those schools, one has already offered a scholarship as well. “Tennessee offered me a scholarship,” he said.

Although Thornton has no more visits setup at this point, he will likely take more soon. “I want to take some more visits, I don’t know exactly where right now,” he said. “Probably far from where I live so I can get a better feel for the colleges far away from me.”
